Academic Excellence Pathway (Extended Project)

A Level

The Academic Excellence Pathway is designed to improve our students’ chances of securing places on the most competitive university courses. It is also an opportunity for students with very good GCSE grades to stretch themselves further and develop their study skills by researching an Extended Project in a topic of interest.

Ancient History

A Level

The influence of the classical world is all around us. The Greeks gave us democracy and theatre; the Romans brought us roads and baths. Classical Civilisation gives you the opportunity to explore how the classical world was shaped and how it has influenced the modern world.

Applied Human Biology

BTEC Level 3

This new course offers students the chance to further their studies of science that takes a different approach from the traditional A-level route. The extended certificate is the equivalent size to 1 A Level.

Applied Law

BTEC Level 3

Law is the subject for you if you have a genuine interest in the Law or the English Legal System, if you enjoy an intellectual challenge or if you are interested in becoming a barrister or solicitor.

BTEC Level 2

This course offers students the chance to build their understanding of Science in order to access level three qualifications.

This course offers students the chance to further their studies of science that takes a different approach from the traditional A-level route. The BTEC level 3 Extended Diploma in Applied Science includes a range of practical laboratory experience and academic study.

ART & Design (Fine Art)

A Level

The Fine Art course offers students many opportunities to get involved in their own area of interest. About 70% of our students progress to do Art & Design related courses post- 18, including Apprenticeships, Art Foundation as well as direct entry on to degree courses such as Fine Art, Textiles ,Graphics, Illustration, Architecture, Product and Interior Design.

BTEC Level 3

The BTEC in Art and Design is a two year art course equivalent to 3 A-levels. The course will provide you with opportunities to sample a wide range of specialist areas and produce a portfolio that will help you to progress onto study at Higher Education, or employment.

BIOLOGY

A Level

Biology at Marple Sixth Form College is in the top 25% nationally for progress. Biology is the science of life. In Biology, you will study how organisms function and interact with each other. Biology is an exciting and fast moving science with new discoveries being made every week, particularly in genetics and in the fight against disease.

BUSINESS

A Level

Business is an exciting and topical course which students can relate to. You will study topics such as marketing, finance, human resources and operations management and analyse how they influence the way in which a Business performs. The course also looks at the impact that external factors have on Business activity such as interest rates, environmental issues and globalisation.

BTEC Level 2

It is a vocational broad-based qualification at Level 2 that provides knowledge and understanding of business and the business environment.

BUSINESS

BTEC Level 3

One of the main aims of the course is to help students prepare for a future in business. This goes beyond focusing on academic skills to work based and personal development. We want our students to be ‘career/university ready’ once they have completed the course with us.

CHEMISTRY

A Level

A-level Chemistry is a rigorous, challenging and ultimately rewarding course that develops students' scientific skills and knowledge. In the first year students will explore the fundamental principles that form the basis of Chemistry and apply this to how Chemistry is used in the modern world. Wherever possible, students carry out experimental work to illustrate the theoretical principles they study.

Choices provision (LLDD)

Each course is set up for one to two years, however depending upon the level of the learner at entry and their individual needs, there is a possibility to progress through the qualifications and remain at college for a maximum of 3 years. There is also some opportunity for some learners to attend on a part time basis if needed.

COMPUTER SCIENCE

A Level

Computer Science is relevant to the modern and changing world of computing. Computer Science is a practical subject where students can apply the academic principles learned in the classroom to real-world systems. It’s an intensely creative subject that combines invention and excitement, and can look at the natural world through a digital prism.

Creative Media

BTEC Level 2

This is a full-time qualification for one year, covering both theoretical and practical aspects of media focusing on creative skills and technologies. The course is ideal if you are interested in a career in Creative Media or prefer to keep your options open.

BTEC Level 3

This is a broad-based two-year course with an integrated creative and technical study of media production which looks at core aspects of the media industry. Although the course is mainly practical by developing skills such as team building, assignments, communication, presentations, software skills and creative product production there are written elements that must be covered in each unit. The qualification is internally assessed and then moderated by a visiting moderator.

Criminology

Level 3

The Level 3 Certificate or Diploma in Criminology is a qualification with elements of psychology, law and sociology that complements studies in humanities but will be attractive and useful to a range of students.

DRAMA & THEATRE STUDIES

A Level

Drama & Theatre can have such a profound influence on us in our everyday lives, changing the way we think and feel and exposing issues and challenging opinion. During this course you will have the opportunity to develop your creative and exploratory skills in devising your own original performance and learning how text can be manipulated to communicate meaning to an audience.

Early Years Educator Diploma

(19+) Work-Related Learning: Level 3

The Early Years Educator Level 3 Diploma is an 18- month course equivalent to 2 A Levels. The course is 100% assessed by coursework and work-related observations, with assignments to meet criteria. The Diploma will lead to a highly specialised work-related qualification comprising the knowledge, understanding and skills required to work in an Early Years setting with children under 5 years old.

ECONOMICS

A Level

Economics also introduces you to business behaviour and labour markets. You will consider the size and growth of firms, their objectives and the different types of market structure. Demand and supply analysis will be applied to wage determination.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE

A Level

Studying the English language is not only fascinating but also enables students to develop a wide range of writing skills which are invaluable for both further study and future employment. Accent, dialect, how language is changing and how we first learn language are only part of the subject. Students also have the opportunity to write creatively and to investigate topics of personal interest such as gender, technology and power.

ENGLISH LITERATURE

A Level

The English Literature course includes a broad range of styles and genres, from the established canon to contemporary writing. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the writer’s craft and how language, form and structure are used to create meaning.

A Level

French is the study of the language and culture of France and the French-speaking world. During the course, you will build up your confidence and competence in the language and extend your knowledge of French literature and civilisation. Much of the work involves discussion and debate on important issues of interest to students.

FURTHER MATHEMATICS

Further Maths is an additional A-Level which you can choose to take as well as A-Level Maths. It covers mathematical concepts and tools which are not included in A-Level Maths, but are used widely in Physics & Engineering courses at university, and introduced quickly at the start of a Mathematics degree, such as matrices and complex numbers.

History’s importance goes beyond the subject’s intrinsic interest and appeal. Every aspect of our lives, from our beliefs, culture, institutions, language and way of life are all shaped by the past.

BTEC Level 3

Information Technology (IT) involves the uses of computers in industry, commerce, the arts and elsewhere. IT includes aspects of IT systems architecture, human factors, project management and the general ability to use computers. Increasingly businesses are implementing IT strategies to manage and process data both to support many business processes and to deliver new opportunities.

Students are taught the links between project planning, systems analysis and design and relational database construction. There are clear links between the units taught. This course equips students with the skills to become successful at university and ultimately, in employment.

A Level

Mathematics is about solving problems. Pure Maths provides methods involving algebra, trigonometry, functions and calculus. Applied Maths is divided into Statistics and Mechanics. Statistics is about data analysis and probability whereas Mechanics is about forces and motion of objects.

MEDIA STUDIES

A Level

We spend huge parts of our life consuming Media. It surrounds us all the time and we use it for all kinds of different and varied reasons. Media Studies teaches you to develop critical perspectives on what you watch, read, listen to, or play every day. It encourages you to reflect on why texts appeal and what purpose they serve in our daily lives.

PERFORMING ARTS (Acting)

BTEC Level 3

The BTEC in Performing Arts is available to study as an Extended Certificate (Equivalent to one A-Level, can be taken alongside other subjects) or the Extended Diploma (Equivalent to three A-Levels, full time programme of study).

PHOTOGRAPHY

A Level

Photography is about looking, learning, thinking and communicating ideas. It inspires creative thinkers. Photography means ‘drawing with light’ and that is what photographers do when they take a picture.

Physical Education is an ideal course for those who wish to develop their understanding of key issues within sport. It provides links to many careers, including physiotherapy, sports coaching, PE teaching and many others.

A career in Public Services is extremely wide ranging, from the Uniformed Public Services, to Government Departments, local Government and organisations such as MI5 and MI6. Our programme will equip you with a good understanding of employment and life within the Public Services and you will gain the relevant and knowledge and skills at Level 2 to be able to progress higher.

This practical course will give you an understanding of employment and life within the Public Services (uniformed and non-uniformed) and you will gain the relevant knowledge and skills to succeed in this sector. It is an ideal foundation for further study and a future career in Public Services.

This Level 2 BTEC qualification is a one year course equivalent to a GCSE. The course will provide you with a range of opportunities to sample a wide range of specialist areas, practically as well as theoretically. This will help you progress onto a Level 3 course in Sport or another subject. Alternatively you will be well prepared to go straight into employment or gain a place on an apprenticeship.

It is assessed through 19 coursework based units which aim to provide you with opportunities to sample a wide range of specialist areas within sport and develop an understanding of the academic and practical skills that will help you to progress into a career in the sports, health and fitness industry.

Supported Internship

Entry Level

A supported internship is a type of study programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 to 24 who have a statement of special educational needs, a Learning Difficulty Assessment, or an EHC plan, who want to move into employment and need extra support to do so.

Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools – Diploma Specialist

(19+) Work-Related Learning Level 3

The Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Diploma Specialist is a progression route from the Level 2 or Level 3 Certificate accreditation, ideal for Teaching Assistants with experience of supporting teaching and learning in the education sector. The Diploma is suited to individuals who are already in employment in schools or colleges.
